PURPOSE
The Damascus Y-Women is the local chapter of the YWCA - National Capital Area and
is a not-for-profit organization. We have been helping women’s & children’s
programs in the local community since 1971. Our mission: empowering women economically,
politically and socially. We support the community through group as well as individual
participation.
PROGRAMS
At each meeting, we have a scheduled speaker, demonstration or craft activity. Topics
are wide and varied and reflect the many interests of the group. Past topics include
women’s health issues, crafts, field trips, gardening, web page design, travelogues,
book and movie reviews and a tea party. Annual events include a holiday cookie exchange, plant exchange, and a “Yankee Gift Swap.”
MEETING TIMES
The Damascus Y-Women meet every Tuesday morning, during the school year, from 9:30
– 11:30 am at the First Baptist Church, 8850 Damascus Road in Damascus.

Why Y-Women?
First and foremost we support our local community!!!
Meetings: Tuesday 9:30-11:30AM
Each meeting will start with a short business meeting. We break for refreshments...Y-Women
LOVE to cook and we are known for our food.
The second part of the meeting can be a speaker or an activity.
If you would like to attend our meeting...just come. We are a fun and friendly group!
Speakers: Y-Women like to learn...our speakers are varied and reflect the interests of
our members. Anything Goes! Past speakers have included organizations we support
(Children's Inn, Damascus Help, DELAI, Our House) or simply educational (Accupuncture,
Decluttering, Design Workshop, Toy Creation, Gardening, How to Sell on Ebay, Photography,
Scrapbooking). If you would like to be a speaker, please don't hesitate to contact
us.
Activities: Y-Women like to do things...so we do!! We do crafts
(cards, favors, mini-scrapbooks, herb gardens, jewelry), Meals-On-Wheels, Senior
Center Birthday Parties, Our House (tutuoring and
Holiday Party), Damascus Help (Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner
for families) and whatever else a member brings to the group's attention (Katrina
Relief, Support a Soldier, Relay for Life) .
Field Trips: Y-Women like to go places...past field trips include
Artway (polymer clay and rubber stamp store), Art of Fire (glass blowing), Jail
(really, we toured the facility and their bakery), Black Rock Center for the Arts,
Damascus Community Center, Winery, Lilypons (water gardening).
Year End Trip: A little bigger and better than our normal trips!
We have gone to Savage Mill, Strathmore Mansion for High Tea and Brookside Gardens.
Special Activities:
Mammogram: In the spring we sponsor a Mamogram Clinic and provide free
exams to area women.
Auction: Proceeds from our Holiday Gift And Craft auction fund
our community assistance programs and the special needs of area families.
Holiday Shoppe: We have vendors on-site at the Damascus American
Legion to provide
a one stop shopping experience!!
